Clean water is one of the basic needs and rights of every individual living on the surface of the earth. Water is not just necessary for human beings but for each entity living in the surrounding. There is no life without water and no health in the availability of contaminated water. Water is directly absorbed into the blood and reaches out to all organs directly. That is why it is highly necessary to intake pure water.
However many parts of our country are deprived of water and that is the biggest cause of our poor health. Cities like Multan are deprived of clean water and that has fallen their health conditions worse. With an estimate of over four million, about 45 percent population of Multan city are affected by the deprivation of clean water. The major cause of the contamination is the elevation of arsenic in the drinking water. And this is because of the faulty underground sewerage system like the breakage of decades’ old pipelines that has caused to increase in heavy metals and arsenic contamination. The toxicity of arsenic poses a serious threat to human life.
The World Health Organization has established 10 micrograms per liter as the permissible concentration in drinking water while Multan is stated to have 50 micrograms per liter arsenic in underground water. This quantity is five times higher than permissible, according to a report of Public Health Engineering (PHE) that came out in 2018-19 through field investigation, survey, and data collection. But yet are not facilitated with clean water.
The elevated level of arsenic can cause different deadly diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and various types of cancer. Moreover, early childhood exposure has been linked to negative impacts on cerebral development that leads to increased deaths in young adults.
This makes it clear that arsenic is a life-threatening chemical that needs to be sorted out to save precious lives. The government needs to resolve this issue on a priority basis and provide clean and drinkable water to the people of Multan. The decline in health does not need any order or notification.
