Pakistan has reached a significant milestone in its naval modernization journey with the arrival of the first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, at Karachi Port. The arrival of PNS/M Hangor represents more than the induction of a new vessel. Equipped with advanced combat systems, modern sensors, Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, and enhanced stealth features, the submarine is expected to significantly strengthen Pakistan Navy’s underwater warfare and deterrence capabilities. The AIP system enables the submarine to remain submerged for extended periods, increasing operational effectiveness and survivability.
The Hangor-class submarine program is one of Pakistan’s largest naval modernization projects and reflects the growing strategic defense cooperation between Pakistan and China. Under the agreement, Pakistan will acquire eight Hangor-class submarines, with four being constructed in China and the remaining four being built at Karachi Shipyard under a technology transfer arrangement.
The submarine was officially commissioned earlier this year in China and is the first of eight Hangor-class vessels expected to join the Pakistan Navy fleet by 2028. Its induction will enhance Pakistan’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests, protect vital sea lanes, and maintain a credible defensive posture in the Arabian Sea and surrounding waters.
