Covid-19; A Chronic Stressor and Drug Addictive

Fariyal Mir

The unpredictability of Covid-19 nature is a major issue for all the people around the globe. It has endangered not individuals but nations. Many countries like American have suffered a lot from it. They have lost their human resources which is the prime resource of all. All the developed and developing countries have tried their level best to encounter this pandemic, yet they cannot do so. All the inventions and discoveries seem useless before this deadly Covid-19 which has altered the system of the globe. The medical specialist has produced Vaccines for it still they are not sure about its efficiency. It has not just destroyed health but has created mental health issues. It has affected the psychology of people and has become a chronic stressor. And this is going to have long-term effects on societies especially the vulnerable ones.

Pakistan being a developing country has become the victim of the Covid-19 psychological cause. In our country, the fear of this pandemic is because of the loss of socio-economic sources, not physical health. The people have lost their jobs which is more endangering to them than the death from Covid-19. Because depression is more hazardous than anything. Even death might be a comfort than the depressed life. Sindh Mental Health Authority (SMHA) and Edhi Foundation have surveyed the causes of Covid-19 and they have found that 42% of people are under depression both from urban and rural areas. This find out is huge and it has involved many in drugs addictions. People take drugs to release their depression and for that they need money and they do not have their source of income. This addiction takes them to different unethical activities like robbing, snatching, being violent, and even murdering. The recent case of Noor Mukadamm’s murder is also the reason for drug addiction.

This drug addiction is mostly because of depression and this depression has many causes. And Covid-19 has become one of the reasons. Pakistan needs to work on the mental health of its people. Our people need awareness about mental health problems. There should be a system of counseling. There should be some immediate action to reduce psychological issues and generate more opportunities for people to avoid the alternatives to lessen their depression. Educating people about life can help out in the eradication of depression. Because some people go under depression even for a little cause. Trained teachers and all other professionals can work out for the elimination of depression. Say no to depression and yes to life.
