Career must be what is chosen not what is imposed

Fariyal Mir

Career has become a challenging word to be defined in Pakistani society. Because here career is imposed upon not chosen. The actual definition of a career is “A Career refers to the individual sequence of attitudes and behavior associated with work-related experience and activities over the span of the person’s life”–Halls. This definition of career is a bit ideal for almost every student in the Pakistani context.

Because a child born in a Pakistani family has no choice to determine his/her career. He/she has no other option than to contemplate the imposed career selection. The person has no free will other than that of their family. The most strange thing is that it is not just the family who is coercing but also the society. Both these parties have decided already what the child has to become. And this is without the determination of the child.

You might dissent with me likewise the same concept is in your mind. no doubt every parent thinks good about their children but what when they predefined a career for an unexplored child. According to Hall career selection is based on the attitude and behavior of one child then how can the imposed one work. A career is about the passion of a person to do something but no in our context you have to do what you are asked to do.

Moreover, the imposition of a career is at the cost of the paranoia of a child. The just-born child is expected to wear a white coat or to draw lines with the tag of engineer. In our country, there is obsession majorly with the profession of doctor and engineer despite the fact that everybody cannot be a doctor or engineer. This level of expectation leads the child throughout his/her life. however, most of the children failed to secure a seat in these two so-called professions and become the victim of criticism. Such children are not just criticized by family but heavily criticized by society.

Some requests

Think for a while Is this a justice with a child who is good at arts? Can he/she perform in the imposed field? And also think about the differences between performance and work. Because these both are samely different terms. A person might be able to work but he/she cannot perform in every situation. The reason is that performance needs an environment.

If you want to build a nation then please never impose your decision upon anybody. Because this country does not need just doctors and engineers but it lacks far behind in many other fields. all those fields have become the victims of your imposition. It is a request to every individual whether he/she is a parent or not to avoid the imposition of a career. Try to give free will to a child to explore him/herself. Because he/she is born with certain capabilities and skills. Remember every child has been sent to this world for a purpose so let them perceive their actual career and serve this nation. Lastly again I appeal to re-read and speculate the definition of a career.
