AKU’S Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta About Mother and Child Health

Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta of the Aga Khan University (AKU) made a tremendous accomplishment in evidence-based public health. For that, he received Roux Prize 2021 for turning evidence into health impact.

Who is Zulfiqar Bhutta?

Zulfiqar Bhutta is a serving professor and a founding director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health and the Institute for Global Health and Development at AKU, and co-director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health. he name of excellence Zulfiqar Bhutta has remained the brilliant one throughout his life. And he has done his MBBS from Khyber Medical College Peshawar. The university awarded him a gold medal and title of “Best Graduate of the Year”.

Aftermath, the name of brilliance has started his professional life at Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. Zulfiqar has done his Ph.D. from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden in 1996. Besides this, the multi-servicing man is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh & London), the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (London), the American Academy of Paediatrics, and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. He has joined AKU Karachi, as a professor in the Department of Paediatrics. Moreover, he has remained Distinguished National Professor of the Government of Pakistan and was the Founding Chair of the National Research Ethics Committee of the Government of Pakistan from 2003 to 2014.

What he has done?

Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta has accomplished and highly contributed to the global policy to improve maternal, foetal, and newborn health. In his work, he has focused on newborn child survival and undernutrition. And he has also emphasized reducing health disparities. Professor has contributed through his pen as well and reaches out to World Health Organization (WHO).

What he has received?

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington has awarded Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta the Roux Prize. David Roux and his wife Barbara funded this award. It is a big achievement for prof. Zulfiqar and Pakistan as well. Because this award is considered to be the world’s largest award for evidence-based public health achievement and has drawn nominations from across the world.

However, Mr. Roux and his wife remarked about the professor: “Professor Bhutta has had a tremendous impact on maternal and child health, as a researcher and a leader, we are thrilled to honor his incredible work and commitment to reducing health inequities.”

The Dean of AKU medical college Dr.Adil Haider commented that: “Dr. Bhutta is a powerhouse of knowledge. Further, he said: “His contribution to the field of medicine and research as a whole is invaluable, with his exceptional work having a phenomenal impact not just at the AKU, but across Pakistan and truly around the globe.”

So far, all the above proves that Pakistan is a place of high potentials. Pakistanis are capable to serve the world, not just Pakistan.
